A Tale of Two Burgers

Texas Chicken

I was really craving for their biscuit, especially after seeing glorious pictures of them here. So while driving back to KL from Johor, I made a quick detour and got me’self this, with a biscuit on the side.

Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of this burger. It was (I think) a promotional item and has something to do with jalapeno. Jalapeno something something burger or something. πŸ™„

I was surprised by the decent size of this burger, with the fried chicken fillet and cheese and nachos and battered jalapeno and whatnot. It was even bigger than Burger King’s burger. It was pretty good too.

As of now, my personal fast food burger size ranking looks like this (the other fast food chains not counted as I don’t remember having them much):

Texas Chicken > Burger King > KFC > McDonald’s

The irony. Last place is the chain that is supposedly specialized in burgers. πŸ™„

Then on the way back from KL to Penang, I got caught in the mother of all traffic jams somewhere near the second bridge. Well, okay, not “the mother of all” level, I’ve been in worse before, but it was pretty bad. Bad enough that I felt like it was necessary to escape from it.

So I made an executive decision to come here for a bit and wait out the jam.

The newly opened Design Village a.k.a. Penang’s first Outlet Mall. Seems like a kids friendly place, judging from the picture above.

FYI, this is NOT a premium outlet place. This is NOT Penang’s version of JPO. You’ll find Padini and that orange signboard Brands Outlet thingy here instead of brands like Burberry or Furla and the likes.

Anyway, it was dinner time, so I headed into Wendy’s, because it was the only restaurant in this place. No the food trucks don’t count, because it was raining.

Here, I got me’self another burger set.

Sorry, I don’t remember the name of the burger, yet again >.< … It was a chicken burger, with some mushrooms and cheese to it. Chicken Mushroom burger? Whatever… πŸ™„

I was disappointed with the burger here though. Especially since it was less than 24 hours since I had the other burger from up top in this post.

Why was I disappointed? Well…

Look at how small the burger is! It looked and felt as small as a McDonald’s burger. Boo! πŸ™

Not to mention the price for both the burger sets featured in this blog post are about the same. Double Boo! πŸ™

So now my updated burger size ranking:

Texas Chicken > Burger King > KFC > McDonald’s/Wendy’s

I guess the moral of the story today is that, if you are in Malaysia and you see a fast food burger joint with a name that sounds like it belongs to a specific person, expect miserly portion. πŸ™„

  1. I don’t know why but I really do hate burgers from those fast food chains for the past tens years. Before it was always nice to get some burgers but I guess ever since I had some real burgers in restaurants it will never be the same for me πŸ™
Btw I must say that the burgers are so much better in China compared to Europe!! Much more spicy and whatnot all else, each time I eat them here (like once a year…) it tastes like nothing

    • There is no reason for those fast food chains in Europe anyway. Not when your typical freshly made sausages and pizzas and everything can be had for just as fast.

  2. Wendy’s just closed down at somewhere nearby my place. I’ve never like dining there anyway. Texas Chicken yes. I love it there. Burger King used to be my favourite long long ago but not anymore. KFC burgers are never in my list. I find them horrible. McD’s are for emergency days.

  3. So ngam that you wrote about Texas Chicken’s honey biscuit….I just had them twice last week…hehe! ;D And in one of those days, I tried their burger (can’t remember the name either)….and it was a whopping one (PH would approve!). I actually don’t mind small-sized burgers as long as I like the taste.

  4. I’m looking at the Texas Burger picture and where are the nachos? Are they inside the burger? If so, pfffttt. Or maybe you mean nacho sauce…

Smaller burger doesn’t mean a burger doesn’t taste good. On the weekend I ordered a cheeseburger at a high class atas fish and chip shop. $10. The burger was smaller than expected, a bit bigger than your Maccas cheeseburger. But it made up for size in terms of the thickness of the meat patty and actual cheese, and it tasted miles better. If it tastes good, it tastes good.

From your photos, I think I would like the Wendy’s burger better. The Texas Chicken one looks like something yuo could make yourself πŸ™„

    • That potato chips looking thing? I guess it is more like tortilla chips, but the menu says nachos so… πŸ™„

I would not make for myself, that Texas Chicken burger. Not the battered and deep fried jalapeno anyway. πŸ™„

  5. If I had to choose a burger between Burger King, KFC and McDonalds, BK would win hands down. I have not had a KFC burger for a long time nor have I had one from abroad eg Turkey, Kazakhstan, Athens.

    • Not even sure if KFC outside Malaysia does burger. Do they do Zinger?

(P.S: Not sure why you keep seeing your comments disappeared. They appear just fine to me. See I am replying to them. Hmm… πŸ™„ )

      • Yes, KFC do burgers outside Malaysia. In London, they have Zinger, Tower, Daddy wotsit etc.

I didn’t visit the KFC in the Middle East and elsewhere. I prefer to eat the local food although they were not always nice.

  6. I don’t usually have any preference for burger chains. So, if the mood strikes, I’ll head to KFC (for the coleslaw) or McD (for the fish burger). I’m still sticking with Burger Theory – only during my time in Adelaide. =P

Now that you’ve mentioned about irony, my friend, a good friend of mine was just talking about Texas Chicken when we met up last week, lol.

  7. Wahhh.. you drove from Johor to Penang straight? My girl and I drove from Ipoh to Johor, took us more than 5 hours and sharing to drive too. If one person, I think I will have to pull over and nap a few times…

  8. ah, I am going to put Design Village as a place to visit when I go to Penang next. Thanks for the intro. I have not eaten any burgers from Texas Chicken yet because I only eat beef burgers, never chicken burgers.

    • I think there is something similar near KLIA. Mitsui or Mitsuya or something like that. No need to come to Penang specifically for this Design Village gua? πŸ™„

      • I think it is Mitsui outlet near KLIA. Of course not go to Penang specifically for Design Village but go to Penang for some other things and ι‘ΊδΎΏ drop by Design Village.

        • If ι‘ΊδΎΏ then yes, really can very ι‘ΊδΎΏ. This place is just off the Bandar Cassia exit, just after the second bridge toll if you coming from island. Same area as the few factories operating there and the akan-datang IKEA…

            • Not sure, but I don’t think got a lot of Penangites go to Ikea for their stuff anyway. I think there is a few service providers that help to purchase and deliver based on the online catalog.

  9. I also rank the Texas Chicken as Number One. In my area, the residents either prefer KGB Burger or those Power Burgers sold by food trucks. I have yet to eat the highly rated power burgers.

Did you accidentally order the Kiddies Meal at Wendy’s??

    • Don’t think so. Of course, it might be possible that I was given kiddies meal by mistake. But, nah… McD full size burgers also as small as this one… πŸ™„

    • But normally people who go to outlet malls would not bother with greens or open spaces. As long as the prices are cheaper then all is well, no? πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
