Mac and Cake

I’ve been skipping breakfast the past weekend. In fact, it was so late that by the time I wanted to have brunch, it was already past lunch time and I feel embarrassed to even call it brunch.

This was my late lunch on Sunday.

Mac and Cheese with prawns and mushrooms

Had this in Secret Recipe. It was RM 21 + GST. I made the mistake of not closely scrutinizing the price before ordering. If I have noticed it was over RM 20, I would probably not have ordered it. The mac and cheese part was alright, but I thought the prawns were… let’s just say the RM 15.90 Aglio Olio from James Foo is more value for money.

While I was contemplating on reminding myself to be more careful with reading the menu in the future, I remembered a certain blog post, so I ordered another piece of cake as dessert, rather spontaneously.

Black Forest Cake

This was breakfast + lunch combined anyway, so it’s fine, right? Right??

I have to say the Black Forest is my most most most favoritest-test-test cake ever. I guess this has got something to do with my childhood. You know, when I was a kid, most of the time the birthday cakes that I got to eat were either Chocolate cakes or Vanilla cakes with fruit toppings (basically those normal and boringΒ cakes) from either the pasar or those local Chinese bakeries.

I never really connected with those cakes. Now that I think about it, maybe that was one of the reasons why I never really enjoyed birthdays, including my own. For quite awhile, my favorite cake was the pandan layer. It was actually my mom’s favorite, but it was better than those boring cakes, so it became my favorite too.

Then one day, on a birthday evening (I forgot whose birthday, was it mine or my sister’s?), the parents brought back a cake with a fancy box and said it was something new and expensive. When I saw the cake, I was disappointed to find myself staring at another chocolate cake.

But when I finally got a slice of it after all the mandatory song singing and candle blowing and whatnot, I saw pieces of cherry within the cream layers of the chocolate cake. I quickly scooped a spoonful into my mouth and OH MY GAWDDDD!!! THIS IS SO FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!!

Today, I could easily find lots of exotic and gourmet and expensive cakes that would make the Black Forest cake look like McDonald’s. But my mind will always remember that first divine mouthful. No other expensive cakes have ever connected with me on such an awesomely incredible level. So, the Black Forest is still, and probably will forever be, my most most most favoritest-test-test cake of all time.

I just wrote 400 words on a piece of cake. What the hell. My mojo is finally back, I think. πŸ˜€

  1. The mac and cheese and the Black Forest Gateau (BFG) look good.

I haven’t had a BFG for a very long time. I think I first had it in the Black Forest, Germany. The cake has gone out of favour in London.

    • Gateau, gosh… haven’t heard this word in a long time. In my Malaysian vocab, a cake is a cake, regardless of what type LOL! πŸ˜€

  2. Same as Princess Ribbon, when I saw your title, Mac, I thought you want to talk about Macdonald, then I realise it stands for Macoroni

Is there SR in Singapore? No impression cos seldom see them around, I saw more Swensons around

  3. One look at your Mac and Cheese and I know it is from Secret Recipe. You know why? Coz my boys have that EVERYTIME we dine here.

I love Black Forest cake too. The first time I had it was at a classmate’s birthday party and I went home telling my mom how awesome it was but my mom doesn’t like it. Until today, she still doesn’t like it.. sigh.

    • Hahaha but you can eat it with your boys now ma, no need to eat with your mom anymore. πŸ™„

  4. ah come on! writing is just a piece of cake for u! u can write ‘lengthily’ on even a piece of rubbish without any problem! great to see that ur mojo is back! am expecting more shitty…ermm I mean quality posts from u soon! btw, pandan layer cake is also my fav cake, but generally I dun have much preferences, I like butter cake, cheese cake, durian cake, I guess all these also stem from childhood.

    • You think so huh… I’ve been fooling you all up down left right and center then. Truth is, I haven’t been feeling too inspired for the past few months.

Childhood memories (and cakes) always the best, isn’t it? I cannot recall if I have ever eaten a durian cake before or not. πŸ™„

  5. YES your mojo is back! Not that it hasn’t always been there… πŸ™„

I probably mentioned this before, but Black Forest cake is my all time favourite cake too. Even growing up partly in Australia, my parents like buying pandan cake or the plain chiffon cake. They even thought swiss roll was a cake (in Malaysia) and still consider it that. My first taste of Flack Forest cake was at some white friend’s birthday at their house and it felt so soft, so fluffy and out of this world in my mouth – all the cherries, whipped cream and cake combined.

Yesterday I was walking past the fairly high-end bakery at the shopping centre and just so happened that their cake of the day was Black Forest ($6.90 per slice). What are the odds that this post dropped yesterday πŸ™„

    • If you did not feel my lack of mojo, then that’s because I did a good job hiding it. That’s good news too, yes!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜›

You know if would be even more of an epic odd if you not only came across the cake but also bought a slice of it. πŸ™„

      • I actually wanted to buy a slice. But I didn’t bring my own container to take away with me (the bakery only gives you a paper bag to takeaway, how to carry home like that) and secondly, for $6.90 that is a lot of a thin slice of cake πŸ™„

        • I’m not sure if my forex converter brain should kick in or not. Should I consider $6.90 as RM 21 or 6 bucks 90? If RM 21 then… WTF so freakin’ expensive!! πŸ™„

  6. When I saw the pic, I knew instantly that that was a cake from Secret Recipe. Unfortunately, I’d say their food aren’t worth eating…both in terms of price and taste (only their cakes are worth eating). Their food I’d consider expensive like that RM21 pasta dish…can get a lot nicer ones for less. The last time I ate here, the prawns weren’t fresh πŸ™ It’s nice that the black forest cake brings back such joyful childhood memories for you.

    • The last time I had a proper meal at SR was at their outlet in JB airport. I thought it was alright. But this round… hmm… probably next time will be like you said, just stick to the cakes.

  7. Hahaha, good to know that your mojo is back! Yay! We get more posts to read now. πŸ˜€

Looking at your photo of the black forest cake, I want to eat it again since it is my favourite cake too. Yum! Yum!

Thanks for warning us that the prawns do not taste good or else I would be deceived by the nice photo to think it is a tasty pasta.

Do you not post at night now? I notice that your posts appear during daytime after your link is back.

    • But I think I still won’t blog daily. Seems like my mojo’s return coincide with my decision to not write daily. I guess this is a normal stage for a daily blogger. After some time, just cannot keep up with it. Might as well stop fighting it I guess. πŸ™„

The prawns, not only do not taste good, but not enough pieces. I got more prawns in the cheaper aglio olio that also tasted better.

Hahaha this quarter (May – July) I have to clear a few days of “encouraged leave”, so sometimes you will see me post during the day, when I am taking a break from actual money making activities.

  8. Yes, I remember Black Forest used to be the prime during my younger days… Only high end and rich people could afford to eat that a long time ago.. It might not cost a lot but to me, a few ringgit with my meager salary last time was considered expensive. Like you said, nowadays we are spoil for choices, so many different types of cakes and they don’t come in cheap too. Now you show it, I feel like eating a piece of BF now! πŸ™‚

    • Right? Back then, the only cakes we get are those from the Chinese bakeries, they don’t do a lot of interesting variety. Then suddenly Black Forest come out, wow! Super high end!

  9. I see your title I thought Big Mac and cake.. Ok la, ngam half.. haha.. I tried the mac & cheese at SR before, I ordered for the kids.. Portion small, and pricey leh.. Actually, eat what also pricey one la in SR.. I usually go for the cornish and chicken cordon bleu.. Hubby likes the beef noodles or something (???) The kids usually fish & chips, what else.. Then a slice of chocolate cake for the boys.. Like that, RM100+ gone-ed.. *sum tong*

    • The last time I ate at SR was on company’s money, so I did not realize their food was expensive. But now, really… Oh my gosh!

Eh but you can order set lunch if you want. They got set lunch every day now, RM 16.90 for main course and ice lemon tea. But only only 1 selection per day lah…
