1P100W #81 – Fish and Chips?

DSC_0003 (800x532)

One thing I particularly like about the revamped cafeteria at work is the Western food counter. It used to be spaghetti, roasted chicken, spaghetti, spaghetti… you get the gist. And their Bolognese sauce, let’s just say me of many years ago (noob cook times) did a better job.

These days, we get all sorts of things, like charcoal burgers for example. And fish and chips! I particularly like the fish and chips because they are generous with the fish portion. And they do a good tartar sauce with bits of onions and whatnot.

Sometimes the chips aren’t chips but something else. Like you see above. Nice?

  1. The sauce on top of the salad doesn’t look like the brownish potato gravy. It looks orangy, so I’d think it’s either cocktail sauce or Thousand Island? πŸ˜‰

    • No, it was normal potato gravy. At least the taste was normal. Probably watered down version or something. πŸ™„

    • Send your son to Penang to work next time, in one of the big American factories. All got such cafeteria one. πŸ˜‰

    • I wonder too. Since it is cafeteria food, you can never tell. It was pretty good though (for cafeteria food standards)…

  2. That looks good and it’s dinner time. I’m drooling!

I have seen there is a British restaurant that servers fish and chips in Suzhou but I’ve never tried. I will have to…

  3. That is fish and chips? Man, the fish looks so…crumby. Not battered like you get here in Oz. I’ve had that kind of fish many times and it never really was my cup of tea.

Luncheon meat. That is always a winner πŸ˜€

    • Well, that’s how a Malaysian fish and chips’ fish looks like… sometimes. You might not be able to get used to it. πŸ™„

  4. Big eater like me sure sokong! Got mash, got sausage, ham.. Yummy looking also wor.. Normal fish & chips only got 1 piece of fried dory, fried and slaw.. tak cukup, haha..

  5. I guess you like that slice of “luncheon meat”, one sausage and one scoop of mashed potatoes with “curry sauce” better than the normal chips, right? ;p

    • Hahaha… I don’t get the “curry sauce”. Why would we associate curry sauce with fish and chips, or something I like? I don’t particularly like “curry sauce”… πŸ™„

      • It looks like curry sauce from the photo but I am not sure so I put a question mark after the curry sauce (but the ? is missing – I think you removed it). So it is mashed potatoes sauce and not curry sauce lah from your reply. It was not my intention to imply that you like curry sauce lah, just that the sauce on top of the mashed potatoes look like curry sauce to me. Aiya, salah faham.

        • Oops! I thought that “/?” was a typo… Really look like curry sauce ar?? I guess it does… hmm… is normal mashed potato gravy lah hahaha… I would not be adventurous enough to try curry mashed potato.

Actually, well… shit. That sounds like a good idea. Maybe I should try it. πŸ™„

          • I like to eat potatoes in chicken curry so I think mashed potatoes (if prepared without butter like those KFC mashed potatoes) should taste ok in chicken curry gravy, right? Come to think of it, KFC could give an option to have their mashed potatoes with curry gravy, hhhhmmmm…

  6. That doesn’t look like the usual plating of fish and chips that I’m used to. That’s one generous portion of fish (I’m assuming it’s dory), btw.

    Was it expensive?

    • Yeah, the “chips” were unique and one of a kind. Well, actually, not one, but many kinds. πŸ˜›

It was RM 7, and I paid RM 5 (RM 2 subsidy for employee)

  7. That was a good portion esp the fish. Is the food subsidised in the canteen? Is there generally a good selection?

    • Yeah, we get a RM 2 subsidy per day for lunch. Our cafeteria, well… it is kind of hit and miss compared to what you can get outside, but it is a rather good cafeteria compared to other factories’ cafeterias in Malaysia.

      • Chips with curry sauce? Is that a Northern thing or Scottish? I was told that the chips in either Devon or Cornwall come with grated cheese. Double calories!

I like triple cooked chips but they are so expansive. I don’t miss it though!

        • That’s not curry sauce, goodness me. Does the gravy really look like curry in the picture? Oh dear…
