Lemon and Herb Shrimps

Let me show you what else I bought from my last grocery run. I bought quite a few new items this round…

I bought this:

I don’t know. I saw an auntie took 5 packs of these, so I thought, it must be some good stuff, so I took one as well.

Turns out, it is just de-shelled and de-veined shrimps and a sachet of lemon herbs seasoning. The packaging said 20 shrimps, I counted 22. As it is quite expensive (RM 16.90), I decided to ration them. I’ll cook 11 today and save another 11 for tomorrow.

The instructions say mix seasoning with 80ml of water. Since I am using half, I mixed it with what I think is 40 ml of water. There’s rosemary and thyme and all sorts of other things in the sachet. Yikes!

The instructions also say to stir fry the shrimps for 2 minutes, then pour the seasoning mixture in and cook until liquid is reduced to half.

Problem is, I also need my quota of veggies. So I ended up stir frying my veggies for 2 minutes first, then added the shrimps and cook for another 2 minutes, then added the seasoning mixture in. The veggie releases water too, so the water ratio is kind of off balance. So to balance out the flavors, I squeeze half a lemon’s worth of juice and added half a tablespoon of soy sauce into the wok as well. Then I basically cooked until the food seems cooked and the sauce tastes somewhat okay to me.

I’m going to eat them with rice after I post this up. I tasted the gravy, it’s good.

I guess I can’t tell you if this pack of shrimps by itself is any good, since I added my own stuff in.

But I don’t really care. I don’t think I will buy this again. If I buy just the shrimps from the seafood section, 22 de-shelled shrimps is probably 250g worth of shrimps. Coincidentally, this pack of shrimps is 250g. AEON sells de-shelled shrimps (isi udang) at RM 3.90/100g, so 250gΒ would be RM 9.75.

This means I’m paying RM 7.15 for a sachet of seasoning with rosemary and thyme (yikes) and fancy packaging.

Nah… Won’t do it again…

  1. mak oi…..more than RM1 a shrimp?

Hmm….like this i think i can open biz selling this la. lemon easy to get. Plenty of herbs in my garden…econsave agak agak 50sen one shrimp.

  2. So the packet of prawns you bought were from the freezer section? Did you feel thirsty after eating this? That is usually what I feel when I eat frozen food 😐

    • Not really, the prawns were frozen fresh I think. If there’s weird stuff, it is the seasoning sachet I guess.

  3. But how did the prawns taste? If it’s fresh and good, still worth it. After all, you’re paying for a premium brand….Pelagos…well-known for seafood bred and harvested through sustainable means.

    • The shrimps were quite fresh lah. I don’t know this brand is well-known. First time I noticed them. 😐

  4. Huh? You so cute la, seriously go count how many shrimp they have it in a pack. But since they do have the seafood section, then of course got it from there is way more cheaper.

    • Yeah, I learned my lesson now. Never do what rich women do, never buy what they buy, even if it is just grocery! πŸ˜€

  5. Mentioning about pre-packed items, i ever saw from supermarket, the packaging looks so attracting and tempting, buy back, cooked it, so so only…

    • Most of those we get here (Malaysia/Singapore) are really like that. I guess it is because they are manufactured by Asian cheating companies. You know, when I buy frozen or pre-packed food in Tokyo/US, they have really good quality stuff.

  6. When you were reducing the water, did you still leave the shrimps inside cooking away? Like that the shrimps are over cooked lah!

Never mind, since you say you will never buy this again. That woman who bought 5 packets must be loaded to eat these kind of packaged shrimps with this price tag.

    • I did, but that’s what the packaging instructions said. I was just following. Terrible instructions, because the shrimps were really overcooked. πŸ™

  7. aiyah pre-packed things sure more expensive lah.. and you have forgotten about adding the factor of frozen shrimps vs fresh shrimps.. next time just get all things from AEON and cook from scratch, sure less than RM10~~ πŸ™‚
