Mom’s Sandwiches

I dreamed of my mom this morning. Actually, to be precise, I dreamed of being back in my primary school days and my mom was making me breakfast in the morning. Strangely, there was only me. I did not know why my brother and sister were not in the dream. Then it all got kind of blurry for a bit. Then for some reason, the school bus came but did not stop, it just drove past me. Then my mom accused me of deliberately missing the school bus.

Then I woke up. What a strange dream.. It did make me miss my mom though. I miss those days when life was so carefree andΒ the only thing I need to worry about is study, study and study. And I miss my mom’s breakfast sandwich. So I decided that I would make a version of mom’s sandwich for brunch.

It is nothing complicated. Just bread slices, cheese slices, tomato slices, and butter. Basically trim off the sides of the bread, the part that we call the skins. Apply butter on one side of the bread slices, then construct each sandwich with cheese slices and tomato slices. And we’re done. So simple, yet so delicious!

I think she won’t make these anymore though. If she sees the photo above now, she would probably say: “Add more lettuce and cucumbers! Add more vegetables!”

What happens to the skins? Mom would sometimes make a delicacy out of them. Crack an egg into a bowl, whisk it up a bit, then soak the skins in the bowl until covered up with egg. Fry those skins for a bit until slightly charred and slightly crispy.

I don’t know what this thing is called. I don’t even know if there is a name for this dish, or if any other moms do this. All I know is that my mom does,Β and they are so so freaking yummy! We always eat these by spooning a dollop of butter onto one edge of these skins and then trying to stuff the whole thing into our mouths. Heaven!

The ones I made, they were not so yummy. I thinkΒ it is lacking an important ingredient. Maybe it is lacking mom’s love.

I miss my mom… I’ll be nice to her when I go home next week..

Actually, I am always nice to her every time I go home. I try my best to, anyway..

I’m writing another post for today, it will come up in a couple hours. That one should be more exciting than a couple of lousy sandwiches. Do come back later today πŸ˜‰ .

  1. At first, I silently berated you for cutting off the crusts of the bread (why do people do that?). :p. But then I read what you did what them, and it looks like THE BEST IDEA EVER!!! It’s like mini French toasts. Yum!!! πŸ˜€

    • I actually didn’t know people do that until I went to college. My family, we never throw the crusts away. We either make mini French toasts, or we just don’t slice them off and eat the bread whole. Imagine how many kids in Africa we can feed if we save all the bread crusts..

  2. After reading your post, I am reminded that I came back from UK for good because I miss my mom. Perhaps one day you will move back to KL to be able to see her everyday or move her to Penang.

The sandwiches sound tasty. I never remove the skin when I make sandwiches so no need to do anything else to the skin.

    • Perhaps… we never know what the future holds πŸ˜‰
We sometimes sometimes, but anyhow we always eat the skin..

    • I suppose so. I was reading some of Boey’s past journals, there is a few where he misses his mom. Must’ve been subconsciously affected πŸ™

    • Throw? What the.. I never knew people throw the skins away. I always thought, either cut off the skins and eat separately, or don’t cut them off and eat the whole thing..

  3. Eh, that’s sweet you missed your mum πŸ™‚ Let me see…mu mum made sandwiches for us too. Not cheese because she doesn’t like cheese (which explains my lack of exposure to cheese) but sardines and eggs. And you are right. Mum’s food when replicated doesn’t taste the same. I have this problem too. Your mum is quite resourceful to use the bread crust to make some sort of French toast instead of throwing them away.By the way, my mum reads your blog hah..hah… πŸ˜€

  4. You can call those french toast…skins!! Lol.
By the way, I saw your post on Boey’s facebook…thanks for the alert. I’ve actualy emailed Boey about my post, otherwise there is no way he would find it. He loved my post and asked if he could share it (of course I said yes) and then he forgot about it until he was reminded by your alert, I think πŸ˜‰

    • I thought it would be nice to help you get his attention, since you sounded like a super fan girl, and I noticed he has a 100% track record of responding on his FB page. I thought it was weird when he said he forgot to share the blog. Why on Earth would be forgot? Turns out you are more sneaky than I thought, good job for contacting him yourself! πŸ˜€
I hope he doesn’t think that I am actually hired by you to hard sell your blog or something 😐

      • Sneaky is my middle name….muahahahaha!!! I think he forgot coz when he asked for my permission to share my post, I took a while to reply (my bad) and then he was off to a radio interview and another 2 days of book signing events…that’s why πŸ˜‰
